Subject vision  

During Year 7, students will complete a core skills course which is then applied and developed in year 8 and 9. The aim is to develop skills in the different disciplines that fit under the design technology umbrella: catering, textiles and product design. These years will provide a base knowledge for the GCSE.

Year 7

Autumn  

Topic title: Key concepts   

Each lesson in this term students will learn about a key concept which underpins design.   

Topics include:   

  • Influential designers   
  • Design brief  
  • Specification  
  • Design communication  
  • 6 R’s   
  • ACCESS FM  
  • Anthropometrics and ergonomics 

Spring 

Topic title: Card modeling   

Pupils will develop their skills in prototyping by learning a read of card modeling techniques. They will look at the role of a prototype in the design process in industry and consider the environmental implications of design.   

Summer  

Topic title: Talk like a designer.  

Pupils will develop their oracy and prepare a presentation to talk about the key design aspects of a chosen product.   

Topic title: Ergonomic design.  

Pupils will make a prototype of an ergonomic pen using the cardboard modeling skills they developed in the spring term   

Year 8

Autumn  

Textiles 

Topic title: Bag Project   

Pupils will learn some basic textiles techniques and apply the design theory learnt in Year 7. They will be inspired by the work of Mary Quant.  

Pupils will learn:   

Sewing machine straight stitch   

Basic textiles equipment    

Plain open seam   

Block printing    

 

Spring  

Product Design 

Topic title: Pen holder   

Pupils will learn how to use some of the workshop tools to create a pen holder. They will then develop their own design inspired by an influential designer.  

Pupils will learn:   

Safe workshop practices  

Pillar drill  

Disc / belt sander  

Types of hand tools  

Prototyping   

 

Summer  

ICT 

Topic title: ICT  

Pupils will learn how to use computer programs for everyday activities and how to use them to support their studies.   

Pupils will learn:  

Online safety (passwords and social media)    

making use of Microsoft office    

researching online    

PowerPoints    

formatting spreadsheets    

Emails and communications.  

Year 9

Autumn 

Textiles 

Topic title: Textiles art

Food technology 

Topic title: Fakeaway  

Pupils will have an introduction to food safety and hygiene and then learn to cook a range of predominately savory meals.    

Pupils will learn:   

Safe storage of food  

Temperature controls  

Use of hob  

Use of oven  

Safe use of a range of basic kitchen tools 

 

Technical Award Hospitality and Catering  

Year 10

Autumn 

Topic title: Safe practice (AO4 & AO3)  

This unit allows pupils to build up their knowledge of safe practice both in a domestic and professional setting as they develop an understanding of food poisoning, health and safety and laws and legislations.    

Practical:   

Pupils will work through a recipe book designed to build their knowledge of different recipe components and increase their skill level.   

Basic elements include:   

  • Pastry  
  • Cakes  
  • Sauces  
  • Bread  
  • Eggs   

 

Spring 

Topic title: Hospitality and Catering Establishments (AO1 & AO2)  

Pupils will learn about the different types of establishments that are part of the hospitality and catering trade.   

Topic title: Healthy diets and nutrition (AC1)  

Pupils will learn about the eat well guide and the function of the nutrients in the body. They will then apply this to different life stages.  

Practical:   

Pupils will work through a recipe book designed to build their knowledge of different recipe components and increase their skill level.   

 

Summer 

Topic title: Working to a Brief (AO1-3)  

Brief 1: Summer Picnic  

Pupils will respond to a brief to plan a summer picnic for a specific life stage. Pupils will apply the learning from the previous half term to the set brief.   

Practical: pupils will cook a range of picnic foods selected by the teacher before making their own choice based on their findings.   

Brief 2: Waste Not, Want Not Bistro  

Pupils will work to plan a menu for a bistro. They will learn about a range of environmental factor s that will affect the menu choices before planning a menu suitable for the set task.   

Practical: Pupils will learn presentation skills and then apply them to the dishes selected to fit the brief.   

Year 11

Autumn 

Topic Title: Unit 2 NEA  

During the autumn term students will respond to an externally set brief. This is a coursework element of the qualification and is made up of a written assignment and a practical examination.   

Spring 

Topic title: Exam revision   

During this half term students will recap the learning from Unit 1 AO1 – 5 in preparation for their terminal examination. 

Summer 

Topic title: Exam revision   

During this half term students will recap the learning from Unit 1 AO1 – 5 in preparation for their terminal examination. 

GCSE Textiles 

Year 10  

Autumn 

Topic title: Mark Making   This topic introduces pupils to creating shapes and finding inspirations from different muses. Topic title: Kew Gardens   Pupils will use a trip to Kew Gardens to inspire them to create textiles design through a variety of workshop style lessons. 

Spring 

Topic title: Fabric Manipulation   

In this topic, students will learn how to use the sewing machine to a high level. Investigating how to manipulate fabric with stitch.  

Topic title: 3D construction & Pattern drafting    

Students will learn the basic skill on how to cut a corset top or shirt. 

Summer 

Topic title: Sustained project  

Students will start looking into creating a response to their sustained project. Using the skills, they have learnt over the previous two terms. 

Year 11 

Autumn 

Topic Title: Sustained project: making the final piece.   

Spring 

Topic title: Exam Project  

Pupils will select 1 of 10 briefs set by the exam board. They will respond to this brief by competing:  

Research into artists  

Primary research  

Samples  

Design work  

Final design  

At the end of this pupils will have a final design which they will make under exam conditions during a school day in the next term.   

Summer  

Topic title: Practical Exam   

Pupils will sit a 10 hour practical exam (this is split over 2 school days). In this time pupils will make the practical outcome planned in project.   

Extracurricular (clubs and trips)
  • Trips to the local college catering department  
  • Workshops with local chefs  
  • South west young chef of the year competition - www.southwestchef.co.uk   
  • A range of trips from Kew gardens, to the V&A museum and trips to Bournemouth arts university. 
  • Work with students in lower years in after school clubs.   
  • Design and make costumes for school productions.
